Why should I attend Workshops, Networking Events & Hackathons?

September 16, 2024 . Hari Sharma

Last week, I met with two IT graduates who asked me, "I went to a GovHack event last year. I didn't learn much. What's the point of going to those events?"

Good question.

If you're focusing on developing technical skills, you might learn more from an online course than by attending a workshop, networking event, or participating in events like GovHack or GDG. However, these events offer much more than just technical learning.

I recently attended the launch event of GovHack as an observer. The experience was invaluable—I met amazing people and connected with industry professionals. For participants, the opportunities are even better. They can tackle real-world problems, find creative solutions using open data, showcase their innovative ideas, and test their skills. Most importantly, it demonstrates their proactivity and eagerness to learn. These events also help improve networking and communication skills, provide visibility, and enhance personal branding.

Remember, success isn't just about technical skills. You also need soft-skills, professionalism and reliability.

It's about building a network, knowing people in the industry, being seen, and creating your personal brand.

That's precisely what these events and workshops help you with.

This is why attending networking events, workshops, and hackathons is incredibly important for your career growth.
